In a whirlwind of a week, we now sit only hours before the biggest game of the season. The Dallas Cowboys will take the field against America's most hated rival, the Washington Redksins. We know what's at stake for these two teams. But how will the game turn out? Let's take a few stabs at it with this week's Headline Predictor. Ready, set, go!
Let's hope that this week's winner has the same foresight that his FB profile picture leads us to believe
When people talk about RG3 going up against this depleted Dallas D, the word "torched" gets used a lot. So it might as well be in the damn headline if it's going to happen. In this scenario, RG3 proves that LCL injury was nothing more than a blip on the radar as the 'Skins coast out to a 21-0 lead after the first quarter. The Dallas defense sells out to stop Alfred Morris, holding him to a mere 57 yards on 22 carries. Unfortunately, Dallas sealed its fate in doing so and Robert Griffin records 378 yards through the air, complimented by 2 Pierre Garcon touchdowns. Romo begins the expected 2nd half charge and cuts the lead to 28-21, but is knocked out on a vicious hit by CB Deangelo Hall. WR Dez Bryant loses control of his emotions after the hit and swings at Hall, leading to a 3rd quarter ejection. Kyle Orton fights valiantly, but throw a pick on the final possession as Dallas drops a heartbreaker in our Nation's capital.
Headline 2: Tony Romo Silences the Critics, Dominates Redskins 28-13
While Tony gets the headline, this game is really about the Dallas defense. RG3 is clearly not healthy and records only 7 yards rushing on 3 carries. Morris gets his to the tune of 123 on 19 carries, but the Dallas secondary picks off Griffin 3 times, twice in the red zone. Morris Claiborne returns his INT for 6 to put the Cowboys up 21-3. Romo gracefully controls the second half as the Cowboys flip the script of the Saints game and win the time of possesion by an almost 2:1 margin. Romo hooks up with Witten and Bryant for early TDs on their first two drives. For once, the Cowboys fans don't have to sweat it out as the team plays its best game of the year.
Headline 3 (Fans Choice): RG3 Hurt, Romo Gets to 5,000, Cardiac Cowboys do it Again, Win in OT 24-21
Okay, I cheated a little bit here. But since the combined headlines came from the same person, I felt it was okay to take a bit of liberty here. As Mike Dougherty predicts, this headline leads the Cowboy into the playoffs. A tight first half sees both the Cowboys and Redskins able to establish themselves on the ground. Murray gets 14 carries and racks up 96 yards before halftime, as Morris is right there with him with 17 carries and 89 yards. The game changes on a huge sack by Anthony Spencer. The ball pops lose and Alex Albright scoops it up and runs it in for a touchdown to put the cowboys up 21-14 with 6 minutes left. The Cowboys are so busy celebrating that they almost fail to notice that RG3 still hasn't gotten up. He stays down on the field for almost 10 minutes and finally gets carried off with his arms around two teammates. After the game we find out Griffin suffered a broken collarbone injury, the same as Romo against the Giants back in 2010.
Luckily for the Redskins, they have Kirk Cousins on the bench. He leads an inspiring game-tying drive that leaves only 14 seconds left on the clock. The game heads into overtime and Washington wins the toss. Cousins leads a solid drive, but Kai Forbath misses his first FG of the year in the form of a 57 yarder that pundits criticize Mike Shanahan for for weeks. Romo takes over and hits Dez Bryant for 43 yards on the first play of the drive. 2 Murray runs set up Dan Bailey with a 37 yarder for the win, and the Cowboys are in the playoffs.
We had a lot of fun writing these this year. We hope and pray that it's not the last one we do for the 2012-13 season, but if it is, a great big thank you to all who participated.
As always, GO COWBOYS!!!! Skin the 'SKINS!!!!!!
