Day 2 of the NFL Draft is upon us. The 2nd and 3rd rounds of the annual college-player-selection process will kick off at about 6:30pm this evening, and it has the possibility of being even more dramatic than a relatively tame 1st round.
While many were dismayed to see Dallas trade out of the 18th overall pick last night, it does set them up for a more exciting 2nd day. Dallas is now set up with the 15th pick of the 2nd round (#47), the 12th pick of the 3rd round (#74 from San Francisco via Carolina), and the 18th pick of the 3rd round (#80).
After years of ineptitude in the later rounds, Dallas has found some useful pieces in recent drafts. In 2012, the team used its 2nd rounder to move up for Morris Claiborne and used its 3rd rounder on DE Tyrone Crawford. 2011 saw Bruce Carter (2nd) and Demarco Murray (3rd) get drafted in the middle rounds, while 2010 saw Sean Lee get drafted in the 2nd round.
It's always difficult to project the later rounds, but this is often where championship teams are built. Even after selecting an interior lineman in Wisconsin's Travis Frederick with the 31st overall pick, don't be surprised to see Dallas target other Guards and Centers such as Alabama's Barrett Jones or Kentucky's Larry Warford. Other needs include Safety, Defensive Tackle, Running Back, and possibly even Tight End.
