Exposing of Dallas Cowboys Draft Board Should Be a Non-Story

Has anyone called it Draft-Board-Gate yet? If not, assume that'll happen shortly. News broke yesterday that the Dallas Cowboys' draft board, complete with rankings and grades for each potential draftee, had been pieced together by SB Nation's Dallas Cowboys site, Blogging the Boys. Naturally, everyone rushed to the presses and spoke of what a big deal it was that Dallas had actually assigned a 2nd round grade to Travis Frederick, not a first-round grade as they had previously told the press.

Who cares? It doesn't matter whether or not he had a first round grade, a second round grade, or a seventh round grade. The team felt comfortable enough to select him as their first round pick, and that should be all that matters. Frederick has kicked off the offseason as the teams starting center, so clearly they've done something right if he's already projected to start.

Many were also quick to point out that Dallas had a 1st round grade on TE Tyler Eiffert, a player that was still available to the Cowboys before they decided to trade down in the first round. Why not just draft Eiffert there, and then pick up the best offensive lineman in the 2nd round? Well, before jumping to a conclusion, ask yourself this question: Who has more impact, a backup TE or a starting center? The correct answer is starting center. Eiffert would not have challenged TE Jason Witten as the starter this season, next season, and quite likely the season after that. The team would've gone through an entire Rookie contract with Eiffert just letting him play backup. Unfortunately, the team had more pressing needs than to allow for such a luxury. Frederick filled that need immediately and is expected to be on the field 100 days from now, when Dallas faces off against the New York Giants.

So, other than the fact that it was some impressive detective work by the guys over at BtB, this story is meaningless.
